Why your competitors show up before you on Google
By Locaris ·

You search for your own service and a competitor appears first, sometimes one you know isn't better. It's frustrating, but there's usually a reason. Here are the most common ones and what you can do.
Their profile is more complete
Compare their Google Business Profile to yours. Do they have more services listed, more photos, accurate hours, a better category? A fuller profile gives Google more to match against a search. Fill every relevant field on yours.
They have more recent reviews
Count their reviews from the last few months, not just the total. Google says review count and rating can contribute to local ranking; replies also show customers how you handle feedback. Building a regular asking habit is often the single most useful change you can make.
They're closer to the searcher
Distance is a big factor, and you can't change it. Results shift depending on where someone searches from. Seeing a competitor first from your desk doesn't mean they're first across your whole area. A ranking heatmap, which checks results from many points around you, gives a truer picture.
Their website backs up their profile
Google looks at your website too. A competitor with clear service pages, their location, and fast loading on phones gives Google more confidence. If your site is a single page or hard to use on mobile, that's a gap worth fixing.
Start with an honest comparison
Pick your top three competitors and compare categories, reviews, photos, and websites side by side. You'll usually spot two or three clear gaps. Fix those first. Our free visibility audit can do this comparison for you if you'd rather not do it by hand.
Put this into practice
- Choose one service search and three nearby competitors. Record where you searched from so you do not confuse one location's results with the whole area.
- Make a simple comparison sheet for primary category, listed services, accurate hours, recent reviews, and the usefulness of each service page.
- Choose one controllable gap, such as a missing service or broken booking link, fix it, and record the change. Avoid changing your business name or address just to copy a competitor.
Conclusion
A competitor appearing first is not proof that their business is better. Compare the details you can improve, recognise the role of distance, and work on specific gaps rather than copying everything they do.
